Mahindra Revises Its Strategy for the Indian SUV Market

Earlier, Mahindra planned to move directly from traditional ICE cars to electric vehicles (EVs). However, as EV adoption in India is growing slower than expected, the company has now decided to launch four new hybrid and ICE SUVs before going fully electric.
This strategy will help Mahindra attract buyers who want better fuel efficiency and performance but are not yet ready to switch to an EV.

1. Mahindra XUV700 Facelift – First in Line

The facelifted Mahindra XUV700 will be the first model to launch among the upcoming SUVs.
Expected design upgrades include:

  • A refreshed front fascia with new headlamps and a six-slot grille
  • Updated bumpers and alloy wheels (likely 18-inch)
  • A sleeker dashboard with a triple-screen layout, inspired by the XEV 9e
  • A new steering wheel with an illuminated Mahindra logo

The facelift aims to keep the XUV700 competitive in the premium SUV segment.

2. Hybrid Version of XUV 3XO Coming in 2026

By 2026, Mahindra plans to introduce a hybrid variant of the XUV 3XO.
This model is expected to use a series-hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor.
In this setup, the petrol engine acts only as a generator to charge a small battery, which then powers the wheels through the motor—offering better fuel economy and smoother performance. {The Deshbhakt Times}

3. Vision.S-Based Sub-4 Metre SUV – Launch in 2027

In 2027, Mahindra will bring a new compact SUV based on the Vision.S concept, which was first showcased in August.
Key highlights of this upcoming SUV include:

  • A rugged, boxy design with high ground clearance
  • Sub-4 metre size to enjoy the lower 18% GST benefit
  • Based on Mahindra’s new NU_IQ monocoque platform, which supports ICE, hybrid (HEV), and electric (BEV) versions

This SUV will target urban and young buyers looking for a powerful yet efficient compact SUV.

4. BE 6e and XEV 9e to Get Range-Extender Hybrid Options

Mahindra also plans to offer range-extender hybrid versions of its BE 6e and XEV 9e models.
These will use an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) setup featuring a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that charges the high-voltage battery.
The battery can also be charged externally via an onboard charger.
This system allows Mahindra to provide EV-like performance while removing range anxiety, making it ideal for Indian driving conditions.

Why Mahindra is Investing in Hybrids

With the Indian EV market still developing, Mahindra believes hybrid SUVs can serve as the perfect middle ground. They combine the efficiency of EVs with the convenience of fuel-powered engines, attracting a larger audience across the SUV market.
